R. Cary Capparelli is the President of Chicago-based Omni-Communique Inc., a global management and marketing entity specializing in sport and motorsport in particular. Cary started on the top: His first job was a 'gopher' for the legendary Andy Granatelli and his STP/March F1 team with the superb future World Champion Mario Andretti as pilot. His first 'professional' job was under the equally legendary Roger Penske as Marketing Director for his Speedway Division.
Capparelli first attended Northeastern Illinois University on an ice hockey scholarship accumulating two scoring championships (goals, assists, and total points). He transferred to Drake University midway through his third season but still managed to finish second in team scoring. Agile and speedy, Capparelli was named to the competitive Central States Collegiate Hockey League All Star Team twice. In his second season, he finished fifth in scoring among the entire 33 team league.
Utilizing his ability to write a market plan, Capparelli targeted American corporations doing business overseas to embark on a racing career throughout Europe and North America. He made over 250 starts in various categories (mostly open wheel in F3 and F2000) winning 7 races. He's the only American driver to ever compete in the Grand Prix of Denmark (F2000), the Grand Prix of Costa Rica (F3), and all 13 Monaco Kart Endurance on the streets of Monte Carlo.
In cooperation with United States Department of State, Capparelli organized the first motorsport events between the former Soviet Union and the United States. The karting events were held in both nations and called the USSR vs USA Super Prix series. After the breakthrough, other events were held in Russia.
He had a long and close alliance with Grupo Aristos, S.A.B., where he handled English-speaking ticket sales for the Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City. Cary also organized the Pan American F3 support race at the United States Grand Prix in Phoenix for the same company. Through his vast international connections, he supplied teams from 7 nations for Michel Jourdain's 'World Challenge' also held in Mexico City.
And, in association with Volksawgen AG, Capparelli formulated the first Formula Three Championship in the United States, called USF3, that adhered to full Federation International Federation (FIA) rules and regulations. The series was designed as a 'stepping stone' for American drivers to progress to Formula One.
Capparelli has also overseen competition management at the Indianapolis 500, Pirelli Porsche Super Cup prior F1 races, Formula 3, and other race groups. He worked with many world-class drivers including Belgian Teddy Pilette in F1, Indy 500 winners Tom Sneva and Danny Sullivan, and the late, great John Andretti in NASCAR. Furthermore, at other times, he ran advertising and public relations operations in Indy-car and other race divisions for various corporarte clients.
Omni-Communique, Capparelli's company, also coordinated Division I hockey games in the Chicago market for the University of Norte Dame, numerous Olympic-style boxing events with USA Boxing, a WBC Lightweight Championship bout, an international bicycle race with USA Cycling, and many other events. Furthermore, he has traveled to 6 of the 7 continents and crossed the Atlantic over 50 times on the super-sonic Concorde.
Interestingly, Capparelli and a former racing team mate partnered a start-up vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina producing award winning wines. The brand, Novus Ordo, self-imported to the North America under the name Vincit Omnia. Novus Ordo is Latin for 'New Order' and Vincit Omnia is Latin for 'Conquer the Universe'.
Cary holds 4 college degrees: a BAJ from Drake University, a MSJ from Medill, Northwestern University, a MA from Northeastern Illinois University, and a PhD in Geography from Birkbeck, University of London. Currently he teaches 'critical regional geographies', online, at South Dakota State University.
